Kingsleigh Primary School

Science

Subject Intent

At Kingsleigh Primary School, we recognise and value the importance of science in every aspect of our daily lives. Our values of belong, aspire and respect drive everything that we do. We endeavour to provide children with the skills and knowledge to become aspiring scientists, to respect the world around them and belong to a scientific community by working collaboratively with their peers. We want our children to appreciate how science has changed and impacted their lives and know that it is imperative to the future of the world. Children will develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

Our enquiry-based curriculum allows all children to have a practical approach to their learning where they can understand different enquiry types. Problem solving, identifying and classifying, pattern seeking, observing over time, researching and comparative and fair testing are intertwined throughout year groups to ensure all children are gaining a full breadth of opportunities to learn as scientists. All aspects of ‘working scientifically’ are interlinked in our curriculum to ensure children understand what it means to be a successful scientist.

Our science curriculum builds upon VIPs (Very Important Points) that are sequenced across topics and year groups. They build upon prior learning that results in the acquisition of knowledge and scientific skills.

Subject Implementation

At Kingsleigh, we ensure we have a clear and sequenced scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum where teaching and learning shows progression across all key stages. Teachers and children use VIPs for their units as part of key understanding acquisition and forms of assessment. Key scientific language is dual coded to support the learning of all pupils. Pupils will readily apply these to written and verbal work. A range of resources will be available to develop their knowledge and understanding which is integral to their learning and supports their understanding of working scientifically. Teaching and learning should plan for practical investigative opportunities within science lessons. Children will have opportunities to reflect on prior learning and cross curricular links will be made wherever possible. Children will be able to build on prior learning and link ideas together, enabling them to question and become enquiry-based learners.  Attainment will be assessed through checking of understanding of VIPS and enquiry-based learning opportunities.
