Science
Subject Intent
In Science, Kingsleigh pupils will develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific topics to help them become successful and thoughtful scientists. Our curriculum journey allows children to build upon existing skills taught in previous years. Key skills and understanding are regularly taught and revisited to ensure all children have a strong understanding of the scientific world around them. Children cover all national curriculum objectives but are also taught what is means to work scientifically through practical, hands-on scientific enquiries. Practical science ensures children’s science learning is more memorable and exciting, leading to a more precise understanding of scientific topics.
Subject Implementation
All children at Kingsleigh have opportunities to develop their scientific knowledge through practical led scientific enquiries. Children begin Reception understanding the natural world around them, using scientific language to understand the physical changes in their world. As children begin their learning journey into KS1, they will develop their scientific language to articulate about scientific topics. Children in KS1 will make observations about phenomena around them and look closely at the natural and human world around them. KS1 children will develop their understanding of different enquiry types by asking questions, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying, observing changes over times, making comparative tests and using secondary sources for further information. As children enter their scientific learning in lower KS2, they will broaden with scientific view of the world. Pupils will be exploring, testing, developing ideas and discussing everyday phenomena and the relationship that has with the natural world. They will continue to question their observations and develop their knowledge of different enquiry types. Children in upper KS2 will deepen their understanding of a wide range of topics. They will explore and talk about their ideas to analyse systematically the results of any findings. Children will select appropriate ways to answer science questions using scientific enquiries. They will also recognise that scientific ideas change over time.
